Since his election as Malta Labour Party leader, Joseph Muscat has been doing the rounds on all local television stations, and presumably he has had his fair share of interviews on radio stations too.

Each time I have come across him on TV, I have heard him speak about the importance of unity within the party. He says that it is only by being united that the MLP stands a chance of winning the 2013 election.

The first thing he should do – to create this unity – is do away with the people within his administration who have been a burden to the MLP for the past years. Many have blamed Alfred Sant for the MLP’s defeat last March, but I truly believe that the likes of Jason Micallef have not been beneficial at all.

Just as much as the MLP needed a new leader, the party now also needs new people in its administration. Elections are not only won by party leaders, but by the party as a whole.

And, in this respect, I think that the MLP would be doing the wrong thing if it changes its leaders but leaves the current administrative set-up. It would be tantamount to telling the people that things have changed on the surface only.
