Hamrun Spartans are already working on strengthening the side for next season.

Club president Gejtu Cuschieri told The Malta Independent on Sunday that the club was more than happy with the outcome last season – a Championship Pool berth and a near miss in the FA Trophy in which they ended losing finalists to Birkirkara.

The club president said it was the committee’s wish to keep the current interest in the club especially among the numerous and loyal supporters. “We are intent to get the club back on previous levels even if it will take some time to achieve our aims,” said Mr Cuschieri.

After their Championship Pool berth the past season, the club’s main target next season will be to earn a berth in one of the UEFA club competitions. In this regard, the club will do its utmost to get the necessary licence from UEFA, via the MFA.

The Spartans are expected to confirm 22-year-old striker Alfred Effiong for yet another season, but it is not yet known whether they intend to retain the services of the other two foreigners – Monye and Timotic.

The club has already confirmed Marco Gerada as coach for the coming season – a reward for the successes the past season.

At present, it is believed that they are also negotiating to get back Valletta midfielder David Camilleri to their ranks – until a few seasons ago, he was a Hamrun star as Rupert Mangion who returned to the club two seasons ago.

Another priority for the Spartans is to try and retain the services of their young star midfielder Ryan Fenech. Rumours are aplenty that a move to either Valletta or Birkirkara is a possibility.
