During the television programme Xarabank” on TVM on Friday 13 June, the newly-elected Malta Labour Party leader Joseph Muscat stated that the Nationalist Party should apologise for what happened in the 1960s.

May I remind Dr Muscat that in the 1960s, when he was not even born, the quarrel was between the Church authorities and the Malta Labour Party, and the Nationalist Party had nothing to do with it.

Where was Dr Muscat between 1971 and 1987? Those were the days when we had one brand of coffee and one brand of tea, and to buy a particular brand of chocolate one had to travel to Sicily. Does he not know that there was a restriction for the number of students to enter the University?

Does he also not know that prior to the 1987 election 8,000 people were given government employment, and this was one of the matters that caused the country’s debt to rise exponentially?

From the above-stated facts one surely comes to the conclusion that the Malta Labour Party should apologise to the people, and not the Nationalist Party.
