The MLP delegates did the right thing when they elected Dr Muscat to the leadership. His vision and his ideas, as we have already seen since he has taken over, are a breath of fresh air to a party that needed it after three consecutive election defeats.

But then they messed everything up by flanking Dr Muscat with two people who will only serve to make a link with Labour’s past. At a time when the MLP is saying that it wants to move forward and forget its past mistakes, it gives the Nationalist Party and the latter’s media ammunition to show that it is acting in an opposite way.

There is no doubt that the PN is already trying to find skeletons in the cupboards of both Dr Farrugia and Dr Abela, and come up with them when the time is right.

Labout should have gone for two deputy leaders who are more similar to what Dr Muscat is for the party today.
