On Wednesday, the Suncrest Hotel in Qawra celebrated its 20th year of operation. Given its strategic location in one of the most picturesque bays in Malta, the Suncrest has today become a landmark 4-star hotel in the northern part of the island. When it was opened in June 1988, the hotel was a much-needed investment by AX Holdings in the tourist industry. This popularity has been retained over the years and the hotel still enjoys a high percentage of repeat customers from the Benelux, German and UK markets.
The hotel has just undergone a e1.2 million refurbishment programme. The project, aimed at providing an innovative and quality-conscious service, consisted mainly of the upgrading of the technical plant, the guest rooms and the public areas. The conference facilities were also upgraded and now include parquet flooring as well as a new sound and visual system. Restaurants, kitchens and service areas were also revamped.
Speaking about the hotel’s 20th anniversary, AX Holdings chairman Angelo Xuereb said: “The Suncrest Hotel is one of the Groups’ assets which, although it has been facing challenging times over recent years, is steadily turning around. Given its unique location, the hotel has incredible potential. We want to retain the hotel within the Group and, as we have done in the recent past, we will continue to invest to ensure that the property retains its high standards.”
Earlier this month, the Suncrest Hotel plc’s board appointed a new management structure, headed by Mario DeBattista in the post of general manager. In his new role, Mr DeBattista will be overseeing the hotel’s operations to ensure that it maintains its strong presence as one of the leading leisure properties on the island. Mr Debattista brings with him a wealth of experience within the hospitality industry, having worked for 30 years with Corinthia Hotels International. During his time with the Corinthia Group, Mr Debattista held various executive positions and was also assigned to manage other hotel operations abroad. For the last five years, he held the position of general manager at the Corinthia Jerma Palace and Corinthia San Gorg and Marina.
