MLP leader Joseph Muscat said that, when he is elected Prime Minister, he will propose a law to introduce divorce.

Why he chose not to answer questions on other issues before he consults with the two deputy leaders and parliamentary group, he was quite clear on such a controversial subject.

This surprises me. Why should, at this point in time, Dr Muscat be so explicit in his thoughts and feelings about this subject? Is it because he is in opposition? Is it because he wants to attract that growing sector of our society which has found itself outside what we know as the traditional family? Is he already trying to win their vote? And, more importantly, will he carry on with his proposal after he is elected, or will he then say that Maltese society does not want it?

The introduction of divorce is a complex matter, and it is therefore strange that Dr Muscat has spoken so much in its favour in his first days as new MLP leader.

The Labour Party and the Church had problems in their relationship way back in the 1960s, and no doubt these problems are set to crop up again if and when Dr Muscat fulfills his promise.

Did he consider this before speaking up? Is Labour prepared to go through the same experience as the 1960s?
