World champion Casey Stoner won the British Moto GP yesterday, powering his Ducati around the Donington circuit in 44 minutes, 44.982 seconds to finish almost six seconds clear of series-leader Valentino Rossi.

Stoner reproduced the dominating form he had last season and, after qualifying on pole position, was rarely challenged.

Five-time series champion Valentino Rossi was second in his 200th GP, increasing his series lead to 11 points over Dani Pedrosa, who finished third after a long racing duel.

The pair traded positions continually throughout the first half of the race before Fiat Yamaha rider Rossi held off Pedrosa’s late challenge.

Australia’s Stoner is in third place in the season standings, 45 points behind, and says he is back in championship contention.

“We weren’t really sure this new set-up would work around this circuit but it did and I hope it can continue,” Stoner said. “At least we can fight for the championship now.

“We have picked it up a little bit this weekend and, with this new setting, and if we can carry on, then maybe we can chase the championship leaders down.”

Rossi said when Stoner got away, it was crucial for him to finish in front of Pedrosa.

“I am happy because I am back on the podium and it is important to finish in front of Dani Pedrosa,” Rossi said. “We tried for the victory but Casey was too fast.”

In the 250cc division, series-leader Mika Kallio of Finland won from Marco Simoncelli and Alvaro Bautista.

Britain’s Scott Redding won the 125cc race, with Mike di Meglio and Marc Marqez taking the other podium places.
