It was reported that some 200 people took part in a walk organised by the Action for Breast Cancer Foundation to raise more awareness about the illness that is unfortunately the cause of death of so many women.

Malta is no exception, and the government needs to take more concrete steps to help women realise the importance of having the necessary tests. It is obvious that the earlier the cancer is detected, the better are the chances that the women involved will be cured.

The government has promised a national breast screening campaign, which turned out to be a political controversy right before the election. Little has been heard since, and it seems that once again the government has forgotten what it promised a few months ago.

Until a national breast screening programme is started, I urge all women, particularly those over 40 years of age, to check themselves regularly and if they have any doubts to consult their physician.
