Tennis: Asciak, Genovese Win British Airways Open singles titles

Matthew Asciak and Elaine Genovese have been crowned Singles champions in the British Airways Open tournament held at the Marsa Sports Club.

This Open tournament is held under the auspices of the Malta Tennis

Federation.

In front of a sizeable crowd, Elaine Genovese, beat Steffi Sullivan 6/0, 6/0. Steffi Sullivan tried very hard to give her opponent a hard time but

she was no match for the number 1 seed Elaine Genovese.

In the Men’s Singles, young Omar Sudzuka lacked the experience and technical ability to face reigning champion, Matthew Asciak, who dominated his

opponent throughout the match. Final result: Matthew Asciak beat Omar Sudzuka 6/0, 6/0.

Mattija Pecotic, Men’s singles finalist for the last few years, had to retire early in the tournament, due to an injury.

The Men’s doubles was won by Matthew Asciak/Danzil Agius who beat Rob Tarpey/Clayton Zammit in the finals.

The Ladies doubles was not held.

Dr David Farrugia Sacco, President of the Malta Tennis Federation, presented trophies and prizes to the winners and runners-up.
