Labour leader Joseph Muscat yesterday pledged the Labour Party’s full support for SmartCity Malta, saying it was a national project and not one that should be embroiled in political controversy.
Dr Muscat was speaking during his first visit to SmartCity, where he was accompanied by MLP secretary general Jason Micallef, Labour spokesperson for IT Leo Brincat, Xghajra mayor Anthony Valvo and Kalkara mayor Michael Cohen.
The delegation held a meeting with SmartCity Malta CEO Claudio Grech during which Dr Muscat was briefed about the different phases of development, particularly Phase One which was launched just two weeks ago.
Phase One will provide over 12,000 square metres of state-of-the-art intelligent office space primarily for ICT and media companies.
Mr Grech said the first tenants should move in by the end of next year.
In his comments, Dr Muscat said SmartCity Malta has the full support of the Labour Party. He also expressed satisfaction that several suggestions made by the MLP in parliament were taken up – such as increasing the focus on the IT sector.
Dr Muscat also praised the two mayors in his party for their pro-active approach towards the project, always keeping in mind the community’s and country’s interest.
