EnKor: We need an encore!

Malta Independent Friday, 4 July 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

On Saturday, 7 June I had the opportunity to attend with a friend of mine a concert organised by the local choir EnKor. I never had the opportunity to listen to this group and I must confess I went with a little bit of apprehension as this was advertised as a Live Gospel Concert and I am not very familiar with this style of music.

The concert lasted for just over two hours and I came out exhausted but exhilarated at the same time.

The whole set-up was excellent; lights, sound etc. The show was very ably presented by TV personality Angele Galea.

The choir sang lively Gospel Songs as well as other contemporary pieces. During the Gospel songs the choir not only sang but almost danced to the rhythm. They had most of the audience truly mesmerised. With just over 30 choir members accompanied by a seven-piece band, the choir seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as the audience.

The great thing about it is that out of 30 singers, I counted over 10 who sang solo parts and they were all very talented. One particular young girl had such a beautiful voice that she got two standing ovations.

A lot of the merit must surely go to the creator and conductor of this group, Johanna Van Lent, who must surely be credited with giving us a choir that is truly different to any other that I have seen and heard.

In the end, the audience couldn’t have enough and amidst standing ovations, wild clapping and shouts for more, the choir gave us three encores before it was all over.

Thanks for a memorable evening and, EnKor please, can we have some more!
