In a sober letter to The Times (1 July), Professor Godfrey Laferla, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Malta, set out in objective and succinct fashion the state of post-graduate medical training in Malta.

Never has the young newly-qualified Maltese doctor had such favourable opportunities to continue with his or her further training and specialisation.

He or she can now do so in programmes run by the local Faculty in concert with the Maltese Medical bodies and associations that are active in the field of continuing medical

education.

Moreover the prospects for many are even brighter, with the inclusion of a leading London medical school with strong links to the Royal Colleges, in joint programmes with the Maltese medical establishment, for post-graduate training and specialisation that involve periods of work in prestigious hospital units both here and in the UK.

The way forward in the promotion and use of our precious medical human resources is being ably worked out by our

present medical leadership.

Both undergraduates and postgraduates in the medical

sector are fortunate to have such people leading the way.
