With reference to San Gwann mayor Rene Savona Ventura’s letter (TMID, 7 July), I would like to clarify some important points.

As explained personally, to the San Gwann mayor, the past few weeks were in fact a transitory period during which the previous contract for the collection of waste generated from bring-in sites came to an end and a new contractor was chosen for the waste collection. This transition meant that certain inconveniences, such as the one in San Gwann, cropped up and WasteServ apologises for the inconveniences caused. Furthermore, we insisted that these instances do not repeat themselves.

WasteServ Malta Ltd is doing its utmost to make sure that bring-in sites are emptied and cleaned on a regular basis and that now we are back on track, with an improved setup so that all bring-in sites are emptied and cleaned every day. The photograph shows the maintenance service we are introducing, where we have personnel who survey each site and wash them accordingly and clean their surroundings everyday.

I take this opportunity to point out that the main problem with bring-in sites is that in spite of educational and awareness campaigns, misuse of the sites is unfortunately still rife. As soon as the bins are emptied and cleaned, some members of the public tend to dirty the site again, with waste that should not be deposited in bring-in sites in the first place. WasteServ, nevertheless, remains positive and thanks the overwhelming majority of citizens who make correct use of these sites. We promise to put further efforts to service and guide the public so as to use our facilities more wisely.

In conclusion, one must stress that bring-in sites are a pivotal component of the waste separation and

collection strategy, and therefore we must do everything within our power to preserve and foster their use. WasteServ Malta Ltd is constantly reviewing the system in order to take corrective actions as required to enhance it, but in this we need the constant collaboration of all stakeholders including Local Councils to help us repeat the message until we convince everyone of the need to dispose of our waste in the proper manner.
