The MLP And the surcharge

Malta Independent Thursday, 10 July 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

The rise in the cost of energy will no doubt have an impact on the pockets of all Maltese families, particularly those who are already finding it hard to make ends meet.

But I must say that the government had no other option in this regard, considering what is taking place in the international oil market.

My question is the following: before the election, the Malta Labour Party used to say that it would have halved the surcharge if it had been elected. It never said how it was going to do it, and how it was going to subsidise it.

What would the MLP have done now, if in government, considering that the price of oil has reached more than $140 per barrel? Would it have gone on with its promise to halve the surcharge (and bankrupt Malta), or would it have found an excuse and pulled out of the deal?

I just wonder.
