On 8 June, The Malta Independent on Sunday quoted Dr Gonzi as saying, “It’s an invasion”, with reference to illegal immigrants. I thought that meant he would do something about it. Little did I realise that for Dr Gonzi an invasion means you bury your head in the sand and do absolutely nothing. All we have done this year is count the numbers of African irregular immigrants landing or being brought to Malta. On 13 July, It-Torca reported that the total number of irregular immigrants arriving in Malta had passed the 10,000 mark – 10,072 to be exact – and that is not counting their children born in Malta.
Also on 13 July, two of your correspondents sounded the alarm bell. Joseph Vella (“No coincidence that alien visitors end up on our shore”) said “not only our politicians but also the Maltese population have to wake up to what is happening”. Joseph Gaffarena (“They keep coming and coming”) noted that these irregular immigrants are ruining the economy, our health and, in a short time, they will be strong enough to form a movement. He added: “I have talked with several Members of Parliament and they agree... but they are too afraid to express this in public”.
Who are they afraid of and why? Do they realise that 90 per cent of the population is of the same view as Mr Vella and Mr Gaffarena? Is there somebody pulling invisible strings and exercising some hidden influence, who is threatening our elected politicians if they dare express the will of the people? Are we a democracy or a dictatorship parading as a democracy?
The number of irregular immigrants arriving in Malta is already higher than two quotas under our electoral system. Can Dr Gonzi tell us openly and honestly why he is following a policy of neglect which so clearly goes against Malta’s national interests? Is he “too afraid to express this in public” as the Members of Parliament quoted by Mr Gaffarena?
Our politicians and the population are very much aware of the threats to our society, our economy and to our very identity as a nation. Can Dr Gonzi tell us honestly, what he thinks and how he intends to deal with a situation, which is getting worse and worse by the day?
