HSBC Sponsors plaques telling Gnien l-Istazzjon’s story

Malta Independent Tuesday, 22 July 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Stand-alone steel plaques, sponsored by HSBC, have been installed at the newly renovated Gnien l-Istazzjon in B’Kara. The plaques document the history, in four languages, of the public garden which housed Malta’s railway station.

The railway service in Malta was officially inaugurated on February 28, 1883 and the regular service for passengers started on the following day on March 1.

The donation, which is part of HSBC’s scheme to fund projects by local councils for the benefit of the community, was presented by HSBC’s Northern Area director Anthony Buttigieg in the presence of Elizabeth Vella, Service and Sales Branch manager at the B’Kara Branch.

Mayor Michael Fenech Adami thanked HSBC for supporting such an educational initiative reviving memories of Malta’s railway service in times past.
