The Divorce reality

Malta Independent Tuesday, 22 July 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

Social Policy Minister John Dalli has got the personal psychological and physical infrastructure to penetrate his party’s hypocritical iron curtain in forging ahead with a divorce discussion within the ranks of an institution notorious for its refusal to call a spade a spade.

Divorce is a reality among us from every conceivable social stratum, but for the legal umbrella. Recent published statistics by the National Office of Statistics have left no doubt that what people like myself have been publicly saying for years was no more than stark reality: we are a country that loves and lives for materialistic pleasure, believing that our religious artificiality will absolve all the wrongs we keep renewing until we depart for the Spirit World.

Fornication, adultery, infidelity, cheating, lies and more damned lies are the order of the day in social circles: this led to the inevitable consequences of uncontrolled cohabitation, children increasingly born out of wedlock, single parents, spiralling sexually transmitted diseases, utilisation of millions of condoms, bare-faced indecent obscenities, adulterous women receiving court maintenance at the expense of the beleaguered husbands, and a Family Court system which leaves much to be desired in its expeditiousness through lack of a realistic mental approach, lack of an adequate infrastructure, lack of resources.

Separations (factual or legal) mean absolutely nothing when it comes to the personal disentangling of a marital bond: imagine not having seen or spoken with your spouse for over 20 years in this tiny speck of a rocky country and still be legally married to that spouse: we are the epitome of hypocrisy!

For years I have spoken and written on this absurdity: finally we get the current leader of the Malta Labour Party and a prominent government minister emerging as the flag bearers of this inevitable reality. Please let us stop any further idiotic discussions, let us face reality and implement divorce in our country, as we have recognised it since 1975 and as the debate is reinvigorating once more particularly as EU Members.

John Dalli – Joe Muscat... just plod on and introduce this blessed divorce for the locals.
