Let me tell you from the very beginning: I have never taken Dr Emmy Bezzina seriously. And more so after having seen him on TV on that cruise liner! And judging from the disastrous result obtained by his party at the polls, I am certainly not the exception. But if you choose to take his contribution “Anarchy in the sun” seriously (TMID 19 July), then you will have to conclude that Malta is led by music loving politicians.

Our Prime Minister and his Maltese delegation are enjoying O Sole Mio in France. Composed more than a 100 years ago this beautiful song is still going strong. Like the Nationalist Party! On the other hand our Archbishop is doing his Waltzing Matilda – assures us Dr Bezzina who, it seems, has an obsession with the Curia.

Dr Joseph Muscat must be singing Chi non lavora, non fa l’amore accompanied by his colleagues who have joined him in chorus: oh, yes, we will make love... Dr Austin Gatt is certainly singing Nessun Dorma at the top of his voice. All’alba vincerooooooo’.

And Dr Bezzina himself? Given his disaster at the polls he is certainly assuring us, like Mario Cavaradossi, E muoio disperato... e non ho amato mai tanto la vita.

And the Maltese people? The vast majority are happily dancing to the duet Libiamo, libiamo... And they have very good reason to be happily celebrating the prosperity of this blessed island.
