Air Malta’s Glasgow Flights

Malta Independent Saturday, 2 August 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

After registering continuous traffic growth for these last ten months, Air Malta is committed to develop further a sustainable all year round business not just to the airline but also to Maltese tourism industry. In order to ensure this sustainability the airline has taken decisions in redesigning its schedule network. It has eliminated routes that were being served by one or two flights a week and has shifted the seat capacity to destinations that could support three or more frequencies per week.

As from this winter, Air Malta will no longer operate directly to Glasgow but will support the destination through a new codeshare agreement that will increase the Glasgow operation from two flights a week to at least two flights a day. The codeshare agreement will also cover other UK regional airports offering daily connectivity to Malta via its London and European gateways.

Air Malta is confident that it will replicate the Scandinavia success, whereby through the Lufthansa Codeshare it has carried more traffic from Scandinavia via Munich and Frankfurt than its own direct service. Today the airline offers three daily flights to the Scandinavian capitals via Munich and Frankfurt. Only network airlines such as Air Malta can continue to support offline destinations through cooperation agreements with network carriers. The airline has also just concluded a cooperation agreement with Turkish Airlines to exploit the Far East and Asian markets via the Istanbul hub.

Air Malta’s traffic growth success of 16 per cent for the period January to June 2008 was only possible through the restructure of its schedule network enforced by its aggressive pricing and marketing strategies.

Whilst retaining its obligations to Malta’s tourism industry, the airline equally has obligations towards its employees and the country for a sustainable economic airline.
