As the government is looking for ways so that all the waste of the Maltese Islands is recycled, it has not yet taken into consideration the bulky waste that either is too heavy to be transported to the waste management site or the fact that the resident disposing of the waste does not have a car. At present, this type of waste that cannot be transported by its owner to the waste sites in Malta and Gozo is put in a skip or rubbish truck and mixed with the other waste.

What if local councils (with the help of the government) introduce a monthly bulky waste scheme that would pick up all waste wood on the first Monday of the month and all the rubble that needs to be disposed of on the second Monday of the month, and so on. Anybody needing this service could inform the council beforehand so as not to waste the time and petrol of the waste collectors. By taking this step the government would be increasing the amount of waste that is being recycled and at the same time meet its obligations to the EU.
