For fairness’ sake I would like to point out that when interviewed telephonically by your correspondent David Lindsay (TMID, 7 August), the whole issue revolved about whether I was happy or not with the new team rather than as implied – as to whether I felt comfortable or not.

When interviewed I made it clear that in my statement of 27 July in The Sunday Times my pledge to respect the verdict of the delegates was made without any condition or inkling as to who the successful candidates could be.

When quizzed by your correspondent on certain specifics about the administrative election outcome I made it clear to him that if I started qualifying my statement then that would have shown inconsistency on my part and that it would have implied that I did not really mean what I said.

I also told him that although I have my faults like others, I pride myself on being one to keep his word.

Satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the result as implied by your correspondent is a gratuitous comment.

My reply all hinged on what he termed “happiness or not.”

If my memory serves me well I told him that the happiness factor does not feature in the equation, the same way it never does when standing for a ruling before a magistrate in whom you have full confidence.
