The article entitled “Divorce Matters” (TMIS, 3 August) truly adds nothing new to the resuscitated ongoing media discussion about the lack of a Malta Divorce Law, a debate that keeps popping up from time to time. This time round it has however gone to a higher level with entrenched political personalities wedging in their considered (too considered indeed!) comments.
The people by and large no longer give a hoot: there are legal loopholes that lets whoever is interested do whatever is in their personal best interests to do. We do not need hypocritical advice from anyone as we have all learnt from our own personal experiences that many who give advice very often do not pretend to see their own problem! So to idiocy, with all this crap.
There is one very simple bit of legislation to modify in our 1975 Marriage Law, and that is to add the fact that we legally recognize foreign Divorce Decrees / Judgements, a legal recognition of the dissolution of a Malta Marriage by Divorce (civil annulments are not featured in this argument for obvious legal realities). There are many models we can refer to when compiling the regulations for such a divorce. This can be done in a short time.
The time for pondering, debating, discussing are long behind us: if a Malta Divorce Law is not put into effect immediately, the people are simply not going to bother. Chaos in our social infrastructure will keep increasing and reach saturation point and we will no longer be masters of the situation, as is evidently occurring with the illegal immigration issue.
Act now as the people are demanding – to hell with what MPs believe or feign to believe. As to what other institutions think, well it is better that you delve deeply into your own crooked curialistic consciences, assuming you have any! It was hilarious to read that the clergy should also be consulted – the next time we will read that all Maltese marriages must be preceded by Holy Orders being conferred on marrying couples, assuming that there will be couples truly interested in getting married in Malta in the near future!
