Former Switzerland captain Ciriaco Sforza has been fired as coach of FC Lucerne after his team fell to the bottom of the Swiss league this weekend.
Lucerne lost 1-0 to surprise leader Aarau on Saturday and has yet to win a match after five rounds. The club has not named a replacement yet.
The 38-year-old Sforza played for Bayern Munich and Inter in his career and made 79 appearances for his country, including at the 1994 World Cup and 1996 European Championship.
He is the second coach to lose his job this season in Switzerland’s 10-team top division. Martin Andermatt was fired by Bern club Young Boys after it failed to win any of its first four matches.
Young Boys on Sunday appointed Vladimir Petkovic as its new coach. The 45-year-old Croat will make his debut in Thursday’s UEFA Cup match at home to Hungarian club Debrecen, in the first leg of the second qualifying round.
