Unattended Dogs

Malta Independent Thursday, 14 August 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

An evening walk at Bugibba seafront recently, with two of my grandchildren, ended up with their having a sleepless night.

At one point, I noticed an elderly lady arguing with a middle-aged man owner of a big dog. It was about a cat which was lying bleeding beneath the pavement. The lady was insisting that the cat was victim of the dog and that he (the owner) should not leave it to wander about without a lead. Besides calling the lady all sorts of names, the man denied any sort of blame saying that the cat was hit by a car. Onlookers, who included also foreign students, were crying their hearts out for the cat,

confirming that it was savagely bitten by the dog.

Since I was not on the scene when the accident happened, I do not know exactly whose fault it is, however, I feel that dogs of a bigger breed should not be left to wander about without a lead especially in frequented areas. This time the victim was a cat. It could have easily been a child!
