It was astonishing to watch, of all people, the likes of former Malta Drydocks chairman Sammy Meilaq threatening, shouting abuse and saying all sort of things except that Malta Drydocks is on its knees.
It is unbelievable how the present Malta Labour Party leader, former leader and the leader before him give their approval for such an insulting and irresponsible behaviour. Isn’t a straight 15 years in opposition with another nine years before enough for the Labour Party? Are they asking for more?
I have been working for 54 years, since 1954, and in all this time I did not take one cent from the government, neither from sick leave nor by means of any gratuity. I paid my taxes regularly. I was employed for a number of years with a 100 per cent government owned company. The company was privatised and none of us 90 employees there received one cent from the government.
The company was Construction and General Engineering Co. Ltd. What is so special with the drydocks workers? Didn’t they cause enough harm to the country’s economy? Isn’t it a fact that the largest chunk of the country’s debt is because of their inefficiency? Why should the Maltese taxpayer continue subsidising these people? Who do they think they are?
The General Workers Union is not worried about the workers but it is worried about itself being able to continue to exist. Tony Zarb has never managed to get one single problem sorted out properly in my book.
I appeal to all Maltese workers not to let anyone fool them. In a few words the Maltese people are not impressed with all the theatrics.
Regarding the MUT’s support to Drydocks workers, may I ask: haven’t the Maltese people helped enough, haven’t the Maltese people paid enough to keep the Drydocks going?. How dare they, the MUT, try to dictate what the government should do on this matter?
