The National anthem

Malta Independent Tuesday, 26 August 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

I love the Maltese anthem. It is so well expressed, there is such deep meaning to it. And I do not mind the religious sentiments in it, though I am not a particularly religious person, and pray only, unfortunately, when I am in difficulty.

However, I do not like the music put to the words. It is like listening to the God Save the Queen. I don’t mind the Queen of England, but I never pray for her. Nor do I pray for the Maltese President, whoever he may be.

Please change the tune. Keep the words, but compose music to them that would be distinctly ours. Surely it must be embarrassing to hear the music of the anthem played abroad, especially if it follows the God Save the Queen.
