In your leader The sound of silence (TMID, 21 August) you highlighted various instances when people are disturbed by other people’s noises – loud music, construction work and so on.

The pity is that nobody seems to care, and those people who complain about such matters often end up being the victims themselves.

If, for example, a bar in a residential area is being kept open with loud music well into the night, and some residents complain about it, it won’t be a surprise if the residents who complain end up having their car tyres slashed.

And this is perhaps why many people refrain from making official complaints. It is useless to argue with bar owners because they will continue doing the same thing once there is little control, if any.

The police should be more pro-active in this sense, and once they receive a phone call from frustrated residents, they should take action.

People trying to get some sleep because they will be on duty the next day or after having arrived home late from work should be able to rest properly.
