Football – English Premier League: Spurs Surprise draw at Chelsea

Malta Independent Monday, 1 September 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

Darren Bent delivered Tottenham’s first point of the season in a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Chelsea, which ended Luiz Felipe Scolari’s perfect start in the Premier League.

Juliano Belletti capped Chelsea’s early domination with a 28th-minute opener at Stamford Bridge, only to see it canceled out in first-half injury time by Bent’s first goal of the season.

While Scolari had won his first two Premier League matches at Chelsea, Spurs manager Juande Ramos was under pressure after two defeats and the uncertainty surrounding Dimitar Berbatov.

Darren Bent operated as the lone striker – supported by Giovani dos Santos and Luka Modric – while Berbatov looks likely to wrap up his bitter move to Manchester United before the transfer window closes Monday night.

Spurs completed the signing of Russia striker Roman Pavlyuchenko as Berbatov’s replacement over the weekend.

While Tottenham’s creative midfielders inspired deep surges in an energetic London derby, it couldn’t mask the absence of a target man with Bent still unable to rediscover his prolific offseason form.

It was Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard looking more likely to produce the breakthrough.

Lampard had a trio of chances in the first 12 minutes with an attempted chip of Spurs goalkeeper Heurehlho Gomes the most elaborate.

The visitors retreated to soak up the pressure but Belletti’s pass got through to Anelka in the 26th. The French striker had time to deftly control the ball, but a less impressive second touch had too much height.

The Blues almost immediately tried again from 30 meters with Essien driving against the cross bar, and the goal came when the ball eventually went out for a corner.

Bent unsuccessfully swung to clear Deco’s corner at the near post and it went off Belletti’s body over the line.

Bent continued to toil in his solo role and the perseverance was rewarded on the stroke of half time.

In a reversal of roles, Lampard’s challenge on Modric ended up with the Chelsea midfielder inadvertently feeding Bent, who slid the ball under the onrushing Cech.

Chelsea had threatened within two minutes of the restart. Ashley Cole sent a low cross from the left flank into the penalty area, but it had too much pace for Anelka to find a connection.

Scolari was unhappy with his players resorting to the long-ball game.

Winger Salomon Kalou, back from the Olympics, came off the home bench but could only skew wide in the 79th. Scolari later claimed Arsenal had attempted to sign the forward during the offseason, but that Arsene Wenger was rebuffed.

With Spurs looking for its first win at Chelsea since 1990, Bale swept past Deco only to be stopped by Bosingwa on the edge of the penalty area. Tom Huddlestone couldn’t take advantage of the free kick from a threatening position.

Jonathan Woodgate, in an assured central defensive partnership with captain Ledley King, displaced Lampard deep into injury time. Appeals for a penalty were dismissed as Chelsea failed to exact revenge for February’s League Cup final defeat.

Three days after leaving Chelsea, winger Shaun Wright-Phillips immediately reignited his career by scoring twice on his return to Manchester City in a 3-0 victory at Sunderland.

Stephen Ireland put the visitors ahead in first-half injury time, after Sunderland defender Danny Collins sent Michael Johnson’s cross into his path.

Wright-Phillips opened his account within five minutes of the restart, latching onto Brazil striker Jo’s pass across goal and sidefooting into an empty net.

It took Wright-Phillips, who left City in 2005, just eight minutes to double his tally, connecting with Michael Ball’s lofted pass and flicking past Craig Gordon.

Later, Liverpool failed to go top of the standings earning only one point at Aston Villa.
