The business and ecclesiastical communities, a number of organisations as well as the public collaborated with Mellieha local council on Friday, Saturday and Sunday towards the success of Iljieli Mellehin.

The usually quiet town welcomed thousands of visitors over the weekend with restaurants, shops as well as places of cultural interest registering very good or record sales. The main road was closed to traffic so that restaurants were able to set up street furnishings while various activities were organised at the Parish Square and Sanctuary courtyard. Activities included sports, a heritage trail, a treasure hunt, an art exhibition and installation, games for children as well as musical and theatrical performances.

Organisations from Mellieha’s twin towns, Adenau in Germany and Cavriglia in Italy also joined in their friends’ activities while exhibiting their artistic works and regional food.

In comments to this newspaper, Mellieha mayor Robert Cutajar thanked all those who worked for the success of the event, including organizations, performers and the business community whose cooperation led towards making the weekend one which many will remember.

While planning to make Iljieli Mellehin an annual event, the council was discussing a similar activity in the form of a market close to Christmas.
