Can I ask if anyone bothered to read Josie Muscat’s article on the shipyards (TMIS, 7 September).

I did and cannot understand why the people of Malta are being so complacent about the closure and sale of the only real asset Malta has. €49 million to get rid of it?

Come on all you Maltese people where has your fighting spirit gone?

Why is this money, €49 million, not being used to get it up and running again?

Selling it off in bits and pieces is not the answer, neither is privatisation.

You only have to look at England as a prime example, as it no longer has any assets worth having.

People are held to ransom for gas, electricity and so on, they have no shipyards, no coalmines. Come on people of Malta fight for your heritage. Keep your shipyards. Malta is still standing even though it shouldn’t be after the bombing it took in the war.

Where has your fighting spirit gone?

The government should sack the present management for allowing it to get to this state, not try and pass them on to whoever buys the shipyards; they have not done their job or it would not be in this situation.

Come on all you Maltese and also all of us who are not, let us fight to keep the shipyard in control of this country for your children and their children, because as long as Malta stands it’s not too late. Write to the government you voted in and demand it as your right.

Maybe the workers should be given the opportunity to buy into it, as that would give them good reason to work to keep it up and running to a good standard.
