Football In Gozo: Bassi goals give Victoria H. a third Independence Cup win

Malta Independent Wednesday, 24 September 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

Victoria Hotspurs won the first honour of the football season in Gozo by defeating Qala St Joseph 2-0 in the final of the Independence Cup. This was the third time in their history that they won this competition.

It was a deserved victory for the citizens.

They were the best outfit and produced the better ideas. They could have made sure of the victory during an earlier stage of the match had they taken the chances which came their way.

Qala tried to match their opponents, but were rarely given the chance to express themselves in front of goal as they suffered the absence of Ricardo Severino, who was suspended.

Fabiano Bassi scored the opener in the 40th minute through a direct free kick that surprised goalie Agius.

Then, after the Hotspurs missed some other chances, they sealed their win with another goal from Bassi in stoppage time.

After the final whistle the Minister for Gozo Ms Giovanna Debono, in the presence of the GFA president Alvin Grech, vice-president Anthony Camilleri, general secretary Joe Bajada and Treasurer George Cini, presented the Independence Cup to Victoria’s captain Michael Vella among the celebrations of Victoria’s players and supporters.
