Handball: La Salle Teams win APS Bank Super Cups

Malta Independent Thursday, 9 October 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

In a quiet and controlled encounter, La Salle managed to upset Kavallieri’s aim to retain last season’s Super Cup.

The game took fifteen minutes to take off with both sides defending with an aggressive 6/0 defence but doing a lot of turnovers on the attacking end.

La Salle took the upper edge in the last ten minutes of the first half with a good defence and fast breaks to take a 5 goal lead. Kavallieri seemed a demoralised side and La Salle made the maximum of it to open the gap to an 8 goal lead by half time.

The game continued on the same track in the second half with Kavallieri doing a lot of turnovers in attack and La Salle exploiting their better physical condition to score on fast breaks. In the last ten minutes Kavallieri tried to bridge the gap but to no avail with La Salle emerging worthy winners for a score line of 25-18.

Both teams had important players missing but Kavallieri RS2 surely missed the experience and leadership of Dennis Witterbrood in centre back. Chris McLean was the best player on court with his 10 goals for the winning side.

Women’s Super Cup

La Salle 10

Aloysians Express 8

In an intense match La Salle beat arch rivals Aloysians with a two goal margin. It was a game that lacked technical flair but which was balanced on the other hand with the individual encounter between Brenda Camilleri and Stephanie Desjardins.

The game was balanced with the teams having a two goal difference between them in the first half. La Salle managed to control well Brenda in this period and Aloysians suffered a bit with their best shooter strictly marked.

In the second half La Salle opened a five-goal lead by the tenth minute and Aloysians changed their defence to 4/0/2 marking Desjardins and Yvonne Barry one on one.

This left its mark as they closed the gap to a two goal disadvantage, but some basic mistakes in attack left them empty handed.

The game was very important to both teams, not only for the cup at stake but also to start the season on the upper hand psychologically.

The season promises to be another fight between these two clubs and starting with a win surely will boost La Salle for their aim of winning this year’s APS Bank Handball League.
