Malta Independent Friday, 17 October 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Rabat played a tactical game using all their experience to control a young and lively Qormi side to win the Super Cup 2-1. As a result the first quarter of an hour was played mainly in midfield, until the 18th minute, when Rabat forced two consecutive short corners from which they forged ahead with a controversial goal through Jason Vella who fired a rising hit in the top left corner.

Protests by the Qormi players proved futile and the goal was allowed to stand.

In the 31st Qormi almost equaliSed however a tap in by Philip Magri from a cross hit by Joseph Cuschieri just missed the upright.

On the 32nd minute, Rabat missed a chance of doubling the score when with Ramon Chircop beaten it had to be Owen Piscopo to clear his goal. Rabat were now showing the finer touches and before the half time whistle had another chance when Jason Vella's effort went wide.

In the second half Qormi went all out to equalise but Rabat were superior on their counter attacks and it was no surprise when on the 58th Josef Antonelli tapped in goal no two.

Qormi kept on fighting for every ball and managed to pull one back on the 66th from a short corner action which saw Daniel Micallef beating Ian Azzopardi with a scorcher.

With a few seconds to go before the final whistle Qormi won another short corner which, to the relief of the Rabat players, was completely fumbled.
