I am sure it must be because I know nothing about wind farms and how they operate – all I can say about them is that they are an abominable eyesore, no matter what their promoters say – but the Prime Minister’s reasoning confuses me. Of course, perhaps it is the Prime Minister himself who is confused, or maybe he wants to take us for more rides, together with those he promised during the election campaign.

He tells us (TMID, 20 October) that his government will be building a wind farm large enough to meet five per cent of Malta’s energy needs, and that Malta will be connecting to the European electricity grid via an underwater Malta-Sicily cable. I am told, I do not know how reliably, that power cuts in Sicily are rampant. I do not know if that is true, and if so, whether that would affect the cable’s dependability, or delivery of the power we need.

He then also tells us that excess electricity produced by the wind farms will be sold to European countries, via the cable.

But if the wind farm we will be having will be producing only five per cent of our electricity needs, how can it have any spare capacity? If there is going to be a ‘spare capacity’, why not use it locally, and serve, say, 24,000 households, for instance, instead of the planned 21,000?

Or is it that maybe the government is not convinced about how reliable these wind farms are, and how efficient, and whether they do actually meet their vaunted production rates but that, in spite of these doubts, the government is willing to take a chance with ‘investing’ our hard earned money, which he is so ruthless in plundering from us, by way of taxation?
