Colette Sultana formed part of the Ladies national team that won Gold in the European Small Nations Squash tournament which took place in Monaco. The team, managed by Liz Said, was composed of Annabelle Olivieri Munro, Theresa Brousson, Johanna Rizzo, and the thirteen-year-old Colette as the reserve player.
The team event was followed by an individuals tournament for all the players. After closely losing the first match 3-2 to Anne Baldoni of Monaco, Colette Sultana then won 3-1 against Laetitia Rodrigues of Monaco and in the final match beat Conny Frick of Liechtenstein 3-1 to win the Plate. This was an excellent result for the Maltese Junior champion who was competing against players seeded 3rd or 4th in their respective country at senior level.
In the meantime Colette has resumed with her intensive preparation, under the guidance of her coach Paul Lake, for her next international tournaments which will be the Swiss Junior Open in December and the Austrian Junior Open in March.
After competing so successfully in the Under 13 Girls category and reaching a top 10 ranking in Europe, these next tournaments will be Colette’s first overseas competitions in the Under 15 Girls category.
During this first year this category it will be tough for Colette since most of her opponents would be a year older, but this will serve as good preparation for the next year when she will be hoping to once again challenge for the top positions in Europe in her category.
Sultana is a member of the MOC Centre of Excellence and is receiving support through the GO Youth Athlete Scheme and Malta Squash. She is sponsored by Wilson.
