Warning Signs

Malta Independent Friday, 31 October 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

The government’s decision to revise the water and electricity rates the way it did will not help the country grow.

People will stop going to restaurants, or cut down on the habit; they will stop buying clothes, or buy less; and they will start living from hand to mouth.

The money they will earn will go towards food, education, health and paying of bills – and they will have little to spare, if any, for other things. I believe that with such a move, the government is giving another blow to an economy that has not developed as much as was predicted.

Before the election, the government was all promises. Our smiling Prime Minister (the ministers were nowhere near him at the time, remember?) was telling us how good we must be feeling and that things will only get better.

“Together, everything is possible” was the slogan the Nationalist Party used before the election. Right now, I think that all together we will all fall down. The pity is that the warning signs were all there but the people did not take heed.
