During a week’s holiday on the islands, we opted to see The Duchess at the St James Cavalier in Valletta.

We missed the film in England and looked forward to a pleasant final evening. The cinema looks great, the building excellent, yet some of the patrons on the Monday night showing were anything but. It must be the worst nightmare to have people wittering during the film to each other and be making excessive noise opening sweets. Someone even jangled keys. We felt backed up by another customer who “shushed” these people. These were not youngsters, but included two old ladies and a middle-aged couple. There were not many people in the auditorium as it was. It marred our enjoyment.

It’s beyond us to understand why people come to watch a film, comment on it – not even quietly – and then consequently disturb others. It’s as if some of these older folk can’t help themselves or forget where they are. The manager at St James said they don’t normally attract such inconsiderate patrons.

We chose a bad night in Valletta.
