In reply to the letter “Immoral and deceiving FIVE06” (TMID, 25 October), the TV Unit-MediaCentre of the Archdiocese of Malta would like to clarify the following points:

FIVE06 is a fictitious drama and does not refer to any particular ‘home’ or person. It was never intended to give a false impression to the public about a particular ‘home’ or to put the staff and residents of such ‘homes’ in a bad light in any way. However, we apologise to anyone who has unfortunately thought that the drama was referring to a particular ‘home’, person or to him/herself.

The aim of FIVE06 is to consider an aspect of suffering, hence the need to promote the appreciation of certain human values in order to minimise such suffering. FIVE06 wanted to consider the extent to which egoism could harm the human person and the people around him/her, particularly the most vulnerable. Undoubtedly, the most vulnerable people in FIVE06 are the girls residing inside the ‘home’. The TV Unit wanted to create an environment where stories exhibiting pain and vulnerability, could be developed in order to promote particular values such as love and forgiveness, which are evident in the last episodes of FIVE06.

Another aim of FIVE06 is to try and change the perception that some people may have towards people residing in such ‘homes’. FIVE06 is worked in a way as to illustrate that an action in itself and the person performing such an action are in a way distinct from each other. It is the type of action/behaviour that can be deemed as appalling or immoral and not the human person.

FIVE06 is a drama which needs to be seen in its totality. It proposes love and forgiveness, empathy and understanding... it criticises prejudice and egoism. It shows that in every person, there’s always a room to reconcile with the past and live the present.
