Disgusted

Malta Independent Tuesday, 25 November 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

I did not write earlier as I was expecting to see a spate of angry protest letters, especially from the personalities of Cottonera, including Parliamentary members, political organisations and last, but definitely not the least, from Church organisations.

But, very sadly, I noted very little public reaction.

I am not a regular viewer of the ‘Bondiplus’ programme on TVM. However, as I had past personal professional connections with the Cospicua Primary School, I made it a point to view the said programme on Monday, 17 November.

More than disillusioned, I was disgusted.

The Public Broadcasting Authority should be ashamed for permitting such an insidious and degrading programme to be aired and to top it all give it a ‘Universal Audience Rating’.

What is so edifying for the general public in seeing a father arrogantly replying negatively to his daughter while drinking beer in such a slovenly manner?

How many parents, presumably accompanied by their children, were elated to hear and view the ‘reconstruction’ of Wendy? A 14 year-old girl being told how to evade getting pregnant while having intercourse with her 20 year-old boyfriend. Worse still, feeling satisfied and happy for becoming pregnant, thus ensuring the companionship of her boyfriend. Not unlike her aunt and her sister, quite contented to fall on social services and unobtrusive gainful employment. What an exemplary presentation!

It is utterly disgraceful to adopt such ‘reconstructions’, said to be based on realities and facts emanating from Cospicua, even had these been from any other district in Malta and Gozo.

Were the advertisers on this programme really pleased with the ware being dished out for public viewing?

The only relevant remark was made by Prof. Karm Borg who stated: “I believe that right now there are lots of angry people, as I myself am angry.” He was referring to the presentation of the ‘reconstructions’. Not only angry, Prof. Borg, but totally disgusted! Anyhow, the quicker the programme was over, the better. At least, lesser damage done!

Finally, none can say that any positive feedback from the programme was registered.
