From Mr A. Zarb Dimech
In this present day and age, the writing on the wall is being read by many who recognise the signs of the different seasons the world is passing through. A classic example is ex-US Presidential Candidate Al Gore, who presented the famous documentary An Inconvenient Truth where he spells out the truth about global warming and carbon emissions and its catastrophic effect on humanity. Some scientists have also gone as far to say that our world will not be the same in 2012, when a meteor will come crashing down on the earth.
To compound the above further, the present world economic and financial crisis has reached such magnitude and proportions not witnessed by mankind since the Great Depression of the 1930s.
On a societal level, the world is in a moral and spiritual quagmire. And it is against this backdrop, that we should assess Malta’s “pains and aches”. A cursory look at our local situation lists the following, which is by no means all-inclusive:
• Family breakdowns and pressures with a political call for the introduction of divorce
• Teenage pregnancies increasing at an alarming rate
• Teenage ‘hard’ drug abuse
• Financial difficulties due to utility cost and basic commodity increases
• Having recourse to occult practices such as mediums and fortune-tellers and other relatively new occult practices such as Emo-Gothic, which are all used as a means of escaping reality.
Our land calls and yearns for a spiritual uplift. We surely need signs, wonders and miracles in the face of our economic and social plight.
We need people in the mould of the first Apostles, disciples and the first Christians to lay hands and heal the wounds in the hearts of people, and cast out the evil spirits that are permeating the very fabric of our country.
My appeal goes to all Church establishments irrespective of denomination, of this overwhelmingly Christian country. Our country needs this spiritual renewal. As I regularly follow foreign TV stations, the call for spiritual revival in the world has never been felt so much as today because all prophesy (both scientific and spiritual) seems to point that the world will never be the same place we lived in a few years’ time!
