In your editorial ‘Political unity’ (TMID, 28 November) you state “at the same conference (Economic Management Consultancy Services business forum), Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, in his typically optimistic style, remarked that Malta could actually turn the current challenges into opportunities if the country is not afraid to make moves which might seem more difficult, but which will, in the long-term, serve the country in better stead”.

It must have been naivety from your part (not to accuse you of political prejudice) to describe Dr Gonzi’s style as ‘typically optimistic’. What do you expect a Prime Minister to be? Just imagine him being pessimistic! After all, he is the one managing Malta’s opportunities, is he not?

Yours would have been a more credible observation were you to describe his quips as ‘tactically positive’. We have not seen Dr Gonzi’s approach in Opposition, yet. When he will be, we would then observe a change in tack, tact and style.

Knowing the Nationalist Party’s sense of optimism and sanguinity, the ‘majority’ would have been protesting, out on the streets, from the next day of the election results being announced, had Labour won by a mere hairline last March and, to boot, would have governed with only 48 per cent of the electorate backing it.

I would even dare say that Labour would not even have had the chance to consult on a callous budget, let alone present it in Parliament.
