I am Matthew Platts Dimech, a member of the EkoSkola group. In our school, we are running a campaign to help the environment. We really would like everyone to be aware of it.

We could start by recycling our garbage. In every locality, you can find recycling bins and there are specialised people who are visiting houses so as to explain how and why we should recycle. There are four different coloured bins: the white is for paper, the blue for plastic, the brown for glass and the black for metal.

It is a very easy task and it doesn’t require a lot of time. When garbage is not recycled, toxins and fumes are released. This is not only bad for the environment but it also affects our health. When we have a party, for example, or having a barbecue, instead of using disposable items, we can use plastic cups and plates which we can then wash and use again.

Now that Christmas is on its way, we can also help the environment by sending fewer Christmas cards. There is no need to give a card to a person if we see that person every day. Instead of giving a card to everyone, we can send e-cards or use the phone. Something else we can do is to re-use wrapping paper, which would reduce the need for paper.

In our school we have taken these decisions. Why don’t you all join us?

If everyone does his part, we will keep the environment clean. Please let’s all work together so that we will have a better country and a better world.
