Planned Mellieha Bay Bypass

Malta Independent Sunday, 7 December 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

From Mr J. Grech

With regard to the controversy to shift the arterial road connecting Mellieha Bypass to Cirkewwa to further inland, it is worth remembering that this is a very busy thoroughfare through which heavy traffic passes all the time. It is also very close to the beach, which in summer is teeming with people sunbathing and swimming.

The heavy traffic on its way to Gozo frequently includes fuel tankers and trucks heavily laden with several layers of gas cylinders. Eliminating this road from near the beach would also mean removing a potential health hazard.

A few years ago in Spain, a fuel tanker being driven on a road that was built close to a beach overturned and caught fire, with disastrous results to the people using the beach at the time.
