I think that environmentalists are making too much of a fuss about the rebuilding of the Ghadira Road. Secondly, their opposition to the project will mean – if the government does nothing – that Ghadira Bay as we know it today will not be enjoyed by Maltese and tourists in the future.

While I understand that environmentalists want to protect the bird sanctuary and Foresta 2000, at the same time I cannot understand why they do not want to save Ghadira Bay. This is the most popular beach in summer; it is also the largest beach that we possess and it would be a real pity if in 50 years time it will be lost. But then, it will be too late to make amends.

The government is right in pointing out what happened in other sandy beaches – Marsalforn, Xlendi, Balluta and St George’s Bay. Wherever a road was build to separate the valley from the beach, the latter was eventually eroded. The same is going to happen to Ghadira Bay if no action is taken.

If environmentalists really have the protection of our natural resources at heart, they should give their consensus to the project, and not put spokes in the government’s wheels.

Added to this, they should realise that unless something is done quickly, Malta will be losing the money that it would be entitled to from the European Union to build this road.
