The Euro

Malta Independent Tuesday, 30 December 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

Remember the doom and gloom predicted by the Opposition when the euro was about to replace the lira this time last year? Remember their reluctance to support the government and their insistence that the euro is introduced at a later stage? Remember their saying that there will be chaos and that the people were not up to it?

Well, a year has passed and it’s as if we have been using the euro all our life. The new currency was absorbed by the Maltese public in a few days and the lira went out of circulation within two weeks. We have even forgotten what the old notes and coins looked like.

It’s just another case when the opposition was completely wrong and the government completely right. It’s another case when the Nationalists showed their confidence in the Maltese people and the Labour Party did not.

I do hope that the PL has now learned its lesson.
