Malta Independent Saturday, 17 January 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) received from the Lija Local Council a number of proposed amendments to the Central Malta Local Plan in the locality of Lija.

In a brief address to the media, in the presence of Lija Local Mayor Dr Ian Castaldi Paris, Mepa chairman Austin Walker said “I fully welcome and endorse this positive initiative that the Lija Local Council has taken. We believe that Local Councils have a key role to play in the upcoming revision exercise of the local plans and we want to give them greater space and flexibility to focus on the issues that really matter to their locality, while at the same time ensuring a focus on national strategic objectives.”

Mr Walker continued to say that “Now that the two year restriction period to reassess the local plans has elapsed, we are reviewing the details of how the local planning exercise can improve especially in the areas of transparency, efficiency and participation. We are striving daily to ensure that every person and institution renews their trust in Mepa.”

Mepa remains committed to implementing sustainable development principles and practices that ensure a better quality of life for today’s citizens and safeguards the natural and cultural heritage for future generations.
