In an announcement appearing in the supplement Gallarija

(TMIS, 11 January), the Malta Community Chest Fund was, by courtesy of the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation and the Metropolitan Chapter, to hold a fund-raising concert at St John’s Co-Cathedral in honour of President and Mrs Fenech Adami.

Fund-raising concerts for philanthropic purposes in St John’s Cathedral are now commonplace but never, to my knowledge, have they been held in honour of any person. They implied and often included formal praise of God for the people who volunteer their time and work to help their less fortunate fellow men and women. This is what a practising Christian would normally expect.

A church is generally considered a House of God, a temple intended for worship and praise of God to whom all praise and honour is due.

The President of Malta is a very important person but he should not be made to take the place of the Almighty, in any celebration in His own house.
