Pippo Psaila is considered by many as the most successful director of sport in the history of the Maltese Olympic Committee.
Elected in November 1993, he has held office till today with the exception of a brief sabbatical of 13 months post the 2003 GSSE hosted in Malta during which he led Team Malta to its historic milestone best ever performance in Maltese sporting history.
He contested five elections being returned every time to his post as director of sport.
During his tenure, Pippo Psaila led the MOC and Team Malta to a total haul of 214 medals in the world’s leading sport events namely, 208 in the Games for European Small States), three in the Mediterranean Games, and other three in the Commonwealth Games, not to mention the Friendship Games … and Malta’s historic best ever placing in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games with William Chetcuti’s eighth placing which placement earned an Olympic diploma.
Pippo Psaila has been the Chef de Mission and team leader in the following games which is also an unprecedented record for Maltese sport: Seven GSSE, three Mediterranean Games, two Olympic Games and three Commonwealth Games.
During these games, he led some 1200 athletes, coaches and officials. Besides his role as director of sport, Psaila has held other posts within the Maltese Olympic committee namely: Chairman of the sports commission, Chairman of the MOC sports awards and Chancellor of the MOC hall of fame.
In the early 1990s, before moving within the Olympic family, he had a most successful two-year spell as football’s national team coach. He will certainly be remembered mostly for the first (and only so far) away victory by Malta in a competitive match – the 1-0 win against Estonia in Tallinn. The epic display of his side against world champions Italy on 19 December 1992 (narrow 1-2 defeat) remains, till today, one of Maltese football’s proudest moments. er 1992, Psaila was named official of the year award in the national sporting contests.
