I write in reference to Valerie Borg’s letter (Convenience, TMID, 20 January).
Bronx Productions (Malta) have already performed a farce last June at their local headquarters at the Mile End. Problem was, nobody in his/her right mind was laughing. Boy George was just an understudy. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi did not emulate the (now) PL in appointing its castaway to the highest office of the Republic. Actually Dr Gonzi did the PL a great favour since Dr Abela cannot be swayed by the old school still existing in the ‘new’ PL as he had already demonstrated 10 years ago and, as a man of principle, would be ready to do it again had he remained a politician in the Labour fold.
Now he is above politics and both sides should lay the issue to rest. Many are convinced that Dr Abela will be a worthy holder of the title as have been his predecessors.
Dr Gonzi selected Dr Abela at some risk; however he found an opportune time to build a bridge where none existed. Whether those on the other side are willing to cross it, remains to be seen. Dr Gonzi has known Dr Abela from their University days and one doubts whether his judgement should be questioned.
Remarks such as those by Ms Borg do very little to foster a better political climate in Malta.
