The fact that all talk about the new President of Malta has already died down a few days after the nomination of George Abela showed how wise Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi was in making the nomination public.
Media speculation was growing too wild, with many names being mentioned. Yet, the Prime Minister stopped it all by proposing Dr Abela for the post. In so doing, he also took the credit for being the first Prime Minister to name someone from the opposing political side as President, and at the same time stop Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat from making up a list of people he had promised.
Dr Gonzi has shown that no one stands near him when it comes to vision and political acumen.
He is able to read the signs of the times and is always a step ahead of the Labour Party. Joseph Muscat has so much to learn from him.
